Texas Drilling Permit and Completion Statistics for May 2025

AUSTIN – The Railroad Commission of Texas issued a total of 557 original drilling permits in May 2025. The total includes 504 to drill new oil or gas wells, 9 to re-enter plugged wellbores, 1 field transfer, 42 for re-completion, and 1 reclass.

The breakdown of well types for total original drilling permits in May 2025 is: 76 oil, 40 gas, 398 oil and gas, 26 injection, and 17 other permits.

In May 2025, Commission staff processed 1,178 oil, 421 gas, and 230 injection completions.
